Research Focus Area: Opportunities for students to create authentic work for real audiences beyond the teacher

Abstract:

Drawing from the authors’ experiences as educators, this paper presents a semester-long activity that brought the social media professional world to students by partnering with the often overlooked university communications office. A mutually beneficial partnership between communication professors and the university communications office can help resource-strained programs extend students’ access to resources, equipment and facilities. By involving university professionals in mentoring and student interaction, advertising and public relations programs can boost students’ professional affiliations. During spring 2015, the authors used experiential learning to simulate cross-departmental collaboration among students in two courses, Public Relations Advanced Writing and Social Media. Students paired with one another on a campus-specific branding/reputation management social media plan for the university’s Office of Communications. While students worked in teams within their respective classes, collaborating on the same project with the Office of Communications allowed the instructors and their students to experience overlaps and distinctions between advertising and public relations.

Research Question(s):

How successful was an experiential learning approach to simulating cross-departmental collaboration among students? Did this curriculum effectively enhance students’ understanding of the digital world and prepare them to work with current technologies appropriate for communications professions?

Methods:

facilitation of semester-long Social Media and Advanced Writing courses that developed researched-based traditional media and social/digital campaigns for The University of Tennesses-Knoxville’s Office of Communications

Setting:

University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK) School of Advertising and Public Relations students

Key Findings:

  • Phase 1: Determining The Case
    • The students were meant develop research-based campaigns and deliverables to help counter UTK’s reputation as an “ugly” campus. The instructors secured the client’s (UTK’commitment for necessary access, information and time.
  • Phase 2: research into insights and influencers
    • Students used secondary research to analyze traditional media coverage and online via digital media mentions (i.e. blogs, websites, social media channels, etc.) in order to understand how UTK’s campus was portrayed.
  • Writing Class Research
    • Writing students used CisionPoint media monitoring software to analyze past media coverage of the UTK campus, university campuses in general, and campus “ugly” lists. Students answered research questions such as why campus attractiveness matters, what media consider “campus,” and what UTK communicates about campus and beautification efforts. Students also conducted research to identify potential media targets, and then made recommendations for improving future media coverage.
  • Social Media Class Research
    • Students were enrolled in Hootsuite University and accessed HootsuitePro to monitor conversations and visual representations of UTK’s campus attractiveness. They also identified potential social media influencers that could impact the online campus beauty dialogue. Teams surveyed and interviewed current students about their perceptions of UTK’s campus “beauty” and social media communication as well as their own social media usage and preferences.
    • Both the Advanced Writing and Social Media students presented “insights and influencers” reports to members of the UTK team halfway through the semester. By offering immediate recommendations at the midpoint of the project, students benefited from seeing research-based recommendations immediately embraced and implemented by the UTK team. As a result, students had increased confidence going into the next phase when they created formal strategic campaigns.

Implications:

  • A crucial element in the semester-long project was the strong “client” engagement with students in both classes.
  • With evolving professional standards and needs, it can be hard for professors to keep pace. This project spotlights the value of the often forgotten internal university communication “agency” and the professional communicators embedded in every higher education institution.
